Obituary for Debra Ellen Elwood

Debra Ellen (Sousa) Elwood, 63, of Walton, NY went to be with her Lord and Savior, in the arms of her daughters and surrounded by loved ones on March 9, 2019. Debby was born in Norwich, NY on January 12, 1956 to Fredrick and Geraldine Sousa, Sr. currently of Oneonta, NY. After graduating from Oneonta High School, where she excelled in music, she received her Bachelor of Nursing from SUNY Canton. She then spent many years working at Fox Hospital and then Delaware Valley Hospital where she met and eventually married Thomas Elwood on October 15, 1977. They spent their life on Oxbow Hollow Road where they raised and cherished their three daughters. Debby enjoyed spending time with her family and their draft horses. Debby and Tom developed and managed the Wednesday Night Olde Time Draft Horse Show at the Delaware County Fair for many years. She also never missed a sporting event whether it was to watch one of her daughters play or to keep score for the girls basketball teams. She also spent every fair week helping her family show their 4-H animals. She became the 4-H Camp Shankitunk camp nurse several weeks each summer. The happiest time of Debby’s life was when she became a substitute teacher at Walton Central School District. While subbing there, she became “mom” to so many students and she “adopted” and loved them like her own. The one thing she always talked about was how she couldn’t wait to be a Grandmother. Her dream came true in 2004 with her first grandson. From then on, she spent her days traveling between the homes of her three daughters staying with them and spending every minute she could with her grandchildren. They lit up her life and kept her going.

She is survived by her daughters: Anne (Andy) Lee of Center Lisle, Emily (Greg) Rudd of Rodman, and Stephanie (Brad) Canniff of Walton; her most prized possessions her eight grandchildren: Jason, Paige, Breanna, Brook and Levi Lee, Abigail and Logan Rudd, and Ivy Canniff. She is also survived by her brother Mike (Mary) Sousa of Oneonta, and her sister Pam (Jim) Phieffer of Nichols; along with several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her devoted husband Thomas E. Elwood and her brother Fredrick J. Sousa, Jr.

A Memorial Service was held at the Alliance Church in Walton on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at 11:00 AM, and a dinner was held following the Memorial Service.

In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation in honor of Debra Elwood to the Walton EMS for all their help over the years.
