Obituary for Stephen Gregory Mapes

Stephen “Cork” Mapes, 70, beloved husband and father was welcomed with open arms into the Kingdom of Heaven on August 14, 2018.

He is immediately survived by the other half of his heart and wife of 38 years, Robin S. Mapes of Deposit, and his daughters Amy Jo Mapes (Boston, MA) and Angela Rae Mapes and her fiance Brian Faulkner (Boston, MA), and his little princess, Lola the dog (Corgi). He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Audrey L. Buell (Deposit); brother, Rick Mapes (Deposit), and sisters, Lilli Mapes (Binghamton) and Mona Mapes Juckett (TN); nephews who were like sons, Matthew Lindhorst (WA) and Ian Lindhorst (Johnson City); and many brothers- and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews.

Stephen was reunited in Heaven with his mother, Josephine Mapes (Madugno); father,
Raymond “Skeeter” Mapes, Sr., and brother, Raymond Mapes, Jr.

Stephen was a lifelong resident of Deposit, NY and a US Army veteran who served as a Military Police officer stationed in Germany during the Vietnam era.

Many of Stephen’s favorite activities included (but are severely not limited to): cooking for his wife and family meals that restaurants could not compete with, baking three pies when one would have been enough, salmon fishing with his nephews in Pulaski, playing Jeopardy (cheated at) and chess (did not cheat at) with his daughter Amy, playing and singing with his Martin guitar, making everyone around him laugh with his quick wit and stories from when he was young, gardening (which is the closest to being with God according to his dad, Skeeter), weekend golfing with his daughter Angela and letting her drive the golf cart (against his better judgment), taking the pontoon boat out on Cayuga Lake, hunting on Red Top mountain, making apple-head dolls and allowing his wife to take credit, attending church on Sundays, making cars speed up when they were trying to pass him, complaining when the music was too low then turning it up full blast (how music is supposed to be listened to), sitting in the sunshine with his wife and Lola taking in all of what nature had to offer, not letting a day go by without making his Robbie laugh and telling her she was beautiful, and loving his three girls with all of his heart. Four if you count the dog.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 19, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the Deposit First Baptist Church with Pastor Bob Matthews officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Deposit First Baptist Church. Condolences may be expressed at www.zachariasfuneralhome.com.
